The following reviews are for the 2004 release Inside the Hollow Realm on Gestalt Art Forms

It starts very quietly, a point of silence slowly drawing away being replaced by gentle waves. And gradually, as you become accustomed to your surroundings, you find yourself "Inside the Hollow Realm". A new collaboration by Jesse Sola of Numina and Brett Smith of Caul, "Inside the Hollow Realm" is an inspired pairing that effectively blends the skills and talents of both artists in such a way as to create something new.

Split into three sections of four tracks each, "Collapse of the Spiral Spire", "The Molten Void" and "A Distant Past Fades", the disc has a conceptual flavor to it, a sense of history within. Images take form in the your mind's eye and then pass from conciousness, leaving only a vague memory of their existence. The first segment "Collapse of the Spiral Spire" opens with "The Wind Speaks", where minimalism and atmosphere slowly give way to strong percussive forms. "Night Sky Descends" passes through the senses like ravens in the dark night sky. "The Gathering" is filled with the sound of electric current fedback through arcane radio systems which bleed into a progressively building drum pattern, bringing to mind a circle, a community. Inspired.

Segment two, "The Molten Void", opens with the same sort of growth from silence, a metallic ringing filling the space. Treated guitar, or is it something else building in the darkness? You can never really tell, images get distorted here and it becomes difficult to trust our senses to describe what we see. "Serpent Sounds" rolls with sleek tones, thin high sounds that weave around you like, well, serpents. "A Brief Reprieve" fills the space with wide open pads, a patch of light in the otherwise dark depths. The reprieve is all too short though, soon to be replaced by the lava like drones of "Molten Flow".

The last segment "A Distant Past Fades" begins with the twinkling starlit patterns of "Aphasia", beautiful, striking, dreamlike. "The Seer" is a study in slowly shifting tones, a sense of mystery, secrets. "Withdrawn" builds in intensity, pads woven through the soundfield like delicate spiderwebs reflecting the light. And then it closes with "The Memories Blend", a summation of all that we've heard, a sense of completion that slowly wraps around itself until it gradually fades. A true delight.

In the past I've made no secret of my appreciation for Jesse Sola's work and I continue to be amazed at his ability to create music that touches me so deeply. With this collaboration his music is perfectly complimented and built upon by Brett Smith and made even more beautiful as a result. I strongly recomend this release to all of you and I eagerly look forward to future collaborations between the two of them.

This music is perfect for people who need something different, refreshing, not too uppity up, but at the same time not drearingly down. This music is neither of those, it is not even in between, it is in a class all by itself. Though it is not in a rush to go anywhere fast it moves along at a pleasing rate. It perks up the mind no doubt for those who have a mind left. There seems to me hints of someone else coming from this music (like the music of Tangerine Dream emanates from the music of Robert Rich) though for the life of me I cannot peg who. If it was to be categorized I would suggest file under new age,or electronic, or Numinalous Caulistic avant-gard. Most of the new music that comes out, no matter what genre it is, grows old real quick. It is filed and forever lost in the shuffle as time moves on and new things sneak in. There are those gems though that stand out like the cry of a hawk stands out next to the soft murmurs of a pigeon. These gems you will now and again hear thanks to a dj who knows quality music and a discernible ear. This new music from Numina/Caul will never be a thing of the past, unless of course life as we know it ends and the creative mind dont last. This creative mind is here to stay so long as i stay on track and my marbles dont roll away.................All poetics aside (momentarily) I really mean it when i say that this new release has struck a chord in me. I know quality.I can distinguish wool from polyester, platinum from silver,a fern from a weed. It is obvious that this duo Numina/Caul has had some background in music, they know notes of a scale in a way individual, out of the norm. Is why their music stands out so much to me. I like a thing different, specially so when quality is involved which is so in this case. May they continue to put out fine music. May i be around to hear it...............................Thank you for anything you can spare. My audience will swallow this new release up.Keep it coming. I will continue to spin. - Charlie Stehlin, "Freeform Radio" WMNF, tampa Florida, October 2004.

Numina / Caul - Inside the Hollow Realm

Numina and Caul combine their efforts together to piecemeal a juicy atmospheric creation that whittles away at the stereotypical soundscape genre. Moody ambience that literally surrounds you with sound.and not white noise..Inside the Hollow Realm. blesses us with the greatest sounds known to mankind. While the atmospheres and moods are ever so bleak the mix never sounded more glorious. Truly an ambient album to be enjoyed in the darkest recesses of your inner self. - J-Sin at Smother.net

Caul is Brett Smith. Numina is Jesse Sola. Inside the Hollow Realm is their first collaboration. Hopefully, it is the first of many. Jesse.s Sanctuary of Dreams is one of 2004's top ten releases. This is one of the top three. It is that good, maybe even better! Jesse and Brett have set this up in a quasi-symphonic structure. The set has three distinct movements - Collapse of the Spiral Spire, The Molten Void and A Distant Past Fades. Each movement has four parts that blend together to form singular soundscapes within the corresponding movement. They are magnificent soundscapes. Actually, soundworld would be a better and more descriptive term. Brett's minimalism weaves a sinuous path around and through Jesse's rhythmic pads and atmospheres. Deep drones with overtone qualities highlight the atmospheres and provide continuity and thematic integrity. The segues are timely and seamless. They allow the soundworlds always deep and provocative - to transition from gentle and quiet to intense and heavy. This is a great CD! Jesse's progression has become exponential. He has ascended to the top echelon of the e-music community.s hierarchy. Brett's certainly a climber with tremendous potential. Together as Numina/Caul - they are near the peak! - Jim Brenholts, October 2004.
